The short answer
Most small home repairs in Boise cost between $100 and $600 per visit. Treasure Valley handyman labor typically runs $60 to $120 per hour, most companies carry a minimum charge around $100 to $150, and the average small job takes one to four hours. The interesting question is not the average but the spread, because the same drywall patch can cost $150 at one house and $400 at another for reasons that are completely knowable in advance. This article walks through the typical ranges by task and the handful of factors that move a bill inside them.

How handyman work is priced
You will see two models in the valley: hourly plus materials, and flat rate per task. Hourly is the traditional model and is fair when the scope is genuinely unknown, like chasing an intermittent leak. Flat rate is better for defined jobs, a faucet swap, a ceiling fan replacement, a door adjustment, because you know the number before anyone starts and the company carries the risk of a slow job.
Neither model is inherently cheaper. An honest hourly shop and an honest flat-rate shop land within a few dollars of each other on the same task, because both are recovering the same labor, drive time, insurance, and overhead. What matters is that the quote states what is included, which is a bigger subject covered in why handyman quotes vary.

Typical ranges by task
These are market ranges for the Treasure Valley, framed as planning numbers rather than quotes. Every house is different, and access, materials, and finish level move each of them.
- Drywall patch, one location: $150 to $350 including texture match and primer. See drywall repair and patching.
- Interior door adjustment or hardware swap: $100 to $250.
- Faucet replacement, homeowner-supplied fixture: $130 to $300. Old corroded shutoff valves add to that, which is common in homes from the 1990s and earlier.
- Toilet repair, flapper, fill valve, or wax ring: $120 to $350.
- Light fixture or ceiling fan replacement on an existing box: $120 to $300 per fixture.
- TV mounting: $100 to $300 depending on size, wall type, and cable concealment. Our TV mounting guide breaks this down.
- Caulking a tub or shower surround: $120 to $250.
- Fence post or picket repair: $150 to $450 per section, covered in detail in fence repair in the Treasure Valley.
- Gutter cleaning, single-story home: $100 to $250.

What moves the number inside the range
Four things explain almost every difference between the low end and the high end: access, materials, finish matching, and surprises behind the surface.
Access is height and reach. A light fixture on an eight-foot ceiling is a stepladder; the same fixture over a stairwell is staging and two people. Materials are quality tiers, a $60 faucet and a $400 faucet install for similar labor but the part changes the total. Finish matching is the quiet cost in older homes: matching a hand-applied texture or a discontinued trim profile takes real time. And surprises are what the wall hides, rotten subfloor under a toilet, a corroded valve that will not close, aluminum wiring that changes the plan. A good quote tells you which of these it has assumed.

The cheapest repair per item is the one that shares a truck roll with three others. A single 30-minute task still pays the minimum charge, because the drive, the setup, and the invoice cost the company the same either way. Book that task alongside a door that sticks, a running toilet, and a wobbly towel bar, and the same visit knocks out the whole list for far less than four separate bookings would total.
This is why we encourage a walk through the house with a notepad before booking. Most homes are carrying five to ten small annoyances that together make one efficient half-day visit. Punch-list style visits like this are the core of our caulking and home maintenance service.

Who buys the materials

Who buys the materials
Either party can supply materials, and the right answer depends on the part. For style-driven items, faucets, light fixtures, cabinet hardware, pick them yourself so you get what you actually want. For commodity items, wax rings, caulk, mud, anchors, screws, let the handyman bring them; the markup is small and the right product shows up.
The failure mode to avoid is the wrong part. A faucet with the wrong hole spacing or a fan too heavy for the existing box turns a one-trip job into two trips, and the second trip costs more than any markup would have. Send photos and measurements before you buy anything with a rough-in dimension.

Some repairs sound small and are not, and the honest answer is a referral, not a quote. Electrical panel work, any rewiring, repiping, water heater replacement in most cases, structural repairs, re-roofing, and anything that needs engineering or major permits belong with licensed specialty contractors. Handyman work is small-job work, typically one to eight hours, done in one or two trips.
Treat it as a warning sign if someone quotes casually on work like that. The pro who says this one is not for us, here is who to call, is the same pro who will handle your small jobs carefully. What to listen for is covered in questions to ask a handyman before booking.

Photos plus a short description get you a firm quote on most small jobs without a site visit. A picture of the damaged drywall with a tape measure in frame, the faucet and the cabinet underneath it, or the leaning fence section tells an experienced estimator most of what a walkthrough would. Jobs with unknowns, active leaks, soft floors, anything electrical that behaves strangely, deserve eyes on site before a number.
When you compare quotes, compare what they contain rather than the bottom line. One number that includes materials, haul-away, and texture matching is not higher than a smaller number that includes none of those.
